Ski North Carolina

You can feel the crispness in the air. You can see a slight glaze on the windshield when you go out to get the paper in the morning. It’s getting darker a little earlier and you just saw the first holiday ad on the television. Sure, its not even Thanksgiving yet, but it’s never too early to plan your North Carolina ski trip. North Carolina may not be the first place you think of when you want to ski, but after one trip your thinking will change.

Several places throughout the Carolina mountains, once the winter hits, can become a wonderland of snow. Perhaps the most famous is Beech Mountain, North Carolina. Beech Mountain is the highest elevation for a ski resort in the Eastern United States. At 5506 feet above sea level, and with 15 ski and snowboarding slopes, ranging from beginner to black diamonds, the thrills and chills will last for days. The base elevation is 4,675 ft. with a vertical rise of 830 feet. Awesome run!! Beech Mountain has 10 lifts which average 9300 skiers per hour, a quick turnaround. It has 100% snowmaking ability and is lighted on the runs for night skiing. Wear your goggles, because it gets very snowy when the snow machines are going full blast. If you need a break from the slopes there is so much to do. Ice skating is offered as a fun alternative to those not skiing. Beech Mountain Village is full of ski stores, equipment rentals, gift shops and restaurants; a great place to take a break and have a hot cocoa. Plenty of lodging is available around the area with a few skier motels and tons of rentals, not to mention condos and houses to rent for any size party. There is nothing like coming back, after a full day on the slopes, to your rented house, starting a fire in the stone fireplace and munching on a hot bowl of chili. Sipping hot mulled wine and talking about the spills and runs of the day will create the perfect memory of Beech Mountain, North Carolina. Go to www.skibeech.com for complete details.

If Beech isn’t what you are looking for, how about Sugar Mountain Ski Resort? This ski resort is located in the small quaint area known as Banner Elk, North Carolina, a great ski town in the mountains with lots of character to charm. Sugar Mountain Ski Resort has 20 slopes on 115 acres with 40% novice, 40% intermediate and 20% expert. It has 1 triple chairlift and 4 double chairlifts. Two of the double chairlifts are the longest in North Carolina. The tubing area has a 700 ft run and boasts its own lift for tubers. Sugar Mountain Ski Resort has a 10,000 square foot skating rink. The base lodge has equipment rental, lift ticket sales, cafeteria, locker room , and a candy store. The ski school, Sugar Bear Ski School, has classes for 5 to 10 year olds and snowboarding instruction for 7 to 14 year olds. The price of the school includes lift ticket, equipment., lunch, lessons and supervision. What a great value for the family. As with Beech there is 100% snowmaking ability at Sugar Mountain. Lodging is extra special with condos on the slopes for ski -in option. If you want more information go to www.skisugar.com for more in depth information.

Thirty minutes north of Asheville is another fine resort, Wolf Resort at Wolf Ridge. Wolf Resort has 82 acres of skiing at 4700 feet with a vertical drop of 700 feet and the base of the mountain at 4000 ft. They boast 2 quad lifts, 2 double lifts and 1 surface lift, with night skiing, snowboarding, tubing, equipment rental and 100% snowmaking ability. Their ski school is one of the best around. The lodging in the area is warm and rustic. They have 2 lodges with massive stone fireplaces to relax in and a Steak & Rib Restaurant for a great hearty meal after a day on the slopes. If you need more information try www.skiwolfridgenc.com.

Surprised at the North Carolina ski resort options? This is the perfect place in the south to hit the slopes, glide gracefully down the mountain or to tuck down real tight and zoom to the bottom. Whatever your style, come visit North Carolina and enjoy the winter.
