One of the most stunning locations in North Carolina is an area just north of Charlotte. Mostly residential, Lake Norman has one of the largest manmade lakes in North Carolina. It was created when Duke Power dammed the Catawba river to generate a hydroelectric power plant. The lake itself was named for Norman Atwater Cocke, a retired Duke Power President. It runs 34 miles in length covering 32,520 acres with a shoreline of 520 miles, and several public access points for boating and swimming. Lake Norman has several parks where you can enjoy the area lifestyle. Jetton Park and Lake Norman State Park are two of the finest. Jetton Park is a neighborhood park in The Peninsula area (a delightfully exquisite upscale subdivision on the lake) and has 105 acres filled with picnic decks, tennis courts, beach area, 1.3 mile bike trail and a 1.5 mile hiking trail. There is a huge playground area full of swings, slides, and laughing kids. It’s a great park to spend a lazy afternoon. Go grab a Subway sandwich and a drink and have a peaceful lunch on the water. Lake Norman State Park in Troutman, North Carolina is another beautiful park to enjoy. The park has 1,328 acres of camping, boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking. If you love the outdoors this would be a great place to spend the weekend tent camping.
If you want a little more luxury, Lake Norman has many of the usual suspects when it comes to lodging , but if you want something really special or if you want to live like the locals, a rental is for you. Condos to homes are available year round for vacation rentals in the Lake Norman area. You can surf sites on the web which specialize in these vacation rentals and find anything from a $300.00 per week for a one bedroom one bath on the lake to a $4,000.00 per week 6 bedroom 5 1/2 bath executive home right on the lake. All you’ll need is the boat for a perfect vacation. Two of the most complete sites are www.vacationrental.com and www.vrbo.com . The have tons of listings in all price ranges. This really is the best way to visit a location because you get to enjoy the area as a native. The food in is this vicinity is a special treat. Lake Norman has several of the Charlotte area’s best restaurants. With so many choices you’ll need to try them all. If a fine dining experience is what you are looking for, go a bit south to Dressler’s in the Birkdale Village. Enjoy a wonder dinner full of fresh vegetables, prime meats and fresh seafood. The desserts are so sinful, so be sure to save room. If you’re looking for something more fun, then Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries is the place for you. A chain, started in Georgetown section of Washington DC, Five Guys boasts one of the best burgers ever. If you can finish the burger you’ll never get through the fries, which come in a large, very large, brown paper bag. Looking for something a bit more ethnic? Try Joel’s Asian Grill and Sushi. Once located in Davidson and moved to it’s current location in Mooresville, this is a local favorite with a long line on Friday and Saturday nights, but well worth the wait. Try the Red Snapper Nirvana, a treat you may only find at Joel’s. There are so many great places to eat in Lake Norman that you may need to stay 2 weeks just to experience them all.
