Every year this small textile town transforms itself into a magical Christmas wonderland with over 450,000 lights twinkling in the night sky. In the center of town a life size nativity scene resides. Those who have done this before know that the lake in the heart of town, surrounded by 75 sparkling trees overlooking the fountain, is the best place in North Carolina to catch the spirit of Christmas. This spectacular event has been a tradition for 50 years. Charlotte residents flock to these lights year after year. The best times to avoid the crowds are weeknights. If you are looking for an old fashioned Christmas celebration, then Historic Rosedale Plantation will drop you right into the middle of the 19th century. The Rosedale Plantation built in 1815 is one of the finest examples of federal period architecture. Most of the original design including the French wallpaper still remains. On December 23, 2007 they have a tour of the old plantation along with a tea service. Its a great way to spend the day before the day before Christmas. Want to stick to the theme of Plantations? Latta Plantation is another stop not to miss. At this 1800’s plantation on December 8, 2007 from 6-9pm you can celebrate Christmas as it was. As you are led through Latta Plantation by lantern, you view the estate as it was in the 19th century. The tour goes through the carriage barn, slave quarters, main house , and kitchen where you see Christmas cooking and crafts as they were in the 1800’s. Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens offers one of the areas finest Christmas celebrations. From Thanksgiving to New Years enjoy the gardens as they sparkle with the joy of Christmas. Each night there are mule team carriage rides, holiday goodies, coffee, and hot chocolate to be enjoyed. They have children activities to add to all the fun and on the Four Seasons Lawn there is 30 -foot decorated Christmas tree. Oh, what a beautiful sight! The gardens will feature around 400,00 lights to sparkle the night away. If you are in the Charlotte area, don’t miss this sparkle extravaganza. Purchase tickets to several seasonal favorites like the Trans - Siberian Orchestra or “The Nutcracker” all on various dates through the month of December at The North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Looking for something a bit different? Then try “A Rockapella Holiday”. These a cappella kings will sing their way through your holiday and pop favorites. There are so many special events offered during the holiday season. You’ll need to try a couple or more.
