Raleigh, North Carolina - Family Fun

How do you spend some good family time in Raleigh, North Carolina? It’s hard not to find a ton of things to do! Raleigh has so much to offer a family it hard to know where to begin. I would start at the Marbles Kids Museum. This hands on interactive children’s museum will challenge your kids to think, create, and feel good about what they are capable of doing. This museum also houses IMAX 3D, showing not only the usual educational films like Sharks 3D and Sea Monsters 3D, but also first run movies like Beowulf, and in February, The Spiderwick Chronicles. If you haven’t ever experienced IMAX or an IMAX 3D don’t miss this unique way to see a movie. After the movies, be sure to check out the traveling exhibits that the Marbles Kids Museum hosts. Coming up in the new year is “Five Friends From Japan”. This interactive exhibit will highlight the lives of five Japanese children. From their school life to everyday life, visitors will be immersed into the culture they live in and the lives they live. Marbles Kids Museum houses four galleries that are permanant and two outdoor “escapes”. This is a great place to create endless memories with your kids. The museum is open Tuesday thru Sunday, with the hours varying. For more information try http://www.marbleskidsmuseum.org.

Want something a bit different? How about a tour of the North Carolina State Capitol? The three floors in the capitol house a Rotunda, the various Legislative Chambers, and the State Library and Cabinet of Minerals Room. The Rotunda has several plaques and busts that honor important dates and famous people in North Carolina history. In the square surrounding the capitol, there are several statues and monuments that also represent important people and events that have happened in North Carolina history. Tours are free, and by reservation you can tour the Executive Mansion ( reservations need to be made at least 2 weeks in advance). There is a lot of history to be learned from the North Carolina State Capitol and you should not miss this fun and educational tour. Guided tours available on Saturday and Sunday only, but self guided tours are available Monday thru Friday. Here is the online site for more info http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/Sections/HS/capitol/default.htm.

Still looking for more? The Mordecai Historic park might just do the trick. This park houses a real antebellum plantation house from 1785, one of North Carolinas largest plantations, and was home to five generations. A tour of the house will unveil furniture from the original family, the kitchen, and a recreated herb garden. You can stroll down a village street full of historic structures including the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States. The Raleigh Trolley Tour departs from the Mordecai Historic Park and would be a fun way to see most of the great sites of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. It lasts about an hour and will return back to The Mordecai Historic park as well as other stops on it‘s path. A trolley ride is always fun for kids and is a great way to explore the city.

These are just a few suggestions for a trip to Raleigh, North Carolina. There are many more great reasons to visit here and bring the whole family. Raleigh is very kid friendly with fun restaurants and great hotels. This would be a perfect trip that is educational, full of history, and plenty of fun.
